Pro-Vue Snap Lens System & Prescription Lens System

One of the more difficult aspects of snowmobiling is the visibility; or lack of. Many times, riding a snowmobile is done in low-light or flat-light conditions, making your ability to see clearly of prime concern. Here at the SnowTech R&D Center, we’ve spent thousands of miles over the years testing and trying various types of goggles, lens colors, shields, masks, and just about every other type of vision-enhancing device available.

We’ve come to the conclusion that for most types of riding, you can safely carry three different lens colors and cover about 90% of the light conditions you’ll encounter. For bright sunny days you want some type of darker lens, and everyone will have their own preference. For low light days, you want some sort of brighter lens that enhances the definition and detail of bumps and hidden obstacles. Then when it gets dark out, there is only one option; a clear lens.

For many years we’ve been carrying an extra pair of goggles. Normally we would start with either the dark or bright goggles, depending on the conditions, and carry the other if needed. If night riding was part of the equation, then maybe a clear pair would be the second set. This would present its own problem in that where do you carry an extra set of goggles? Everyone would carry them somewhere, but it was never easy.

Members of our test staff who also need prescription lenses have been using the Pro-Vue prescription goggles for several years, and would never go back to riding without them. One problem this presented was that they had to choose what color of outer lens they would use. This need brought about the Pro-Vue Snap Lens system.

Pro-Vue started making their prescription goggles with a clear outer lens, with a set of snaps up on the lens corners. Different colored lenses were then fitted with snaps so the user could “snap-on” an outer lens of whatever color they chose. But the idea was so good that Pro-Vue smartly decided to offer the concept to all goggle users.

Now you can get a set of clear, dual lens goggles with the Snap Lens system. Carry extra lenses of whatever color you want or need, far easier to pack than an extra set of goggles. The base goggle lens is clear, so you’ve got the night riding covered. Bring along a dark lens and a bright lens and you’ve about got it licked.

Pro-Vue offers lenses in six different colors (and clear if you want to protect the base clear lens), so just about everyone will find a lens tint to their personal liking. The snaps work good enough that it was never an issue getting the lens to snap on or snap off. Pro-Vue actually updated the lenses last season so they snap on and off even easier. About the only (minor) issue we had was with occasional snow dust collecting between the outer snap lens and the base lens. This would only occur in very specific powder conditions, and was never more than an occasional annoyance; not big enough to overcome the convenience and function of the system the rest of the time.

For those who wear eyeglasses or contacts, the Pro-Vue Prescription Lens System is nothing short of excellent. Send Pro-Vue your current prescription, and a set of lenses are placed inside of the goggles for the best vision you’ve ever experienced while riding. A set of prescription goggles will cost you $169.95 ($179.95 for Scott) ($249.95 for Smith Turbo Fan goggle), and you can get the Snap Lens System with three colored lenses for $189.95 ($269.95 with three lenses for the Turbo Fan). If all you need is the Snap Lens System, a pair of dual-lens vented Smith goggles with three tinted lenses will cost $59.95, all six tints is $79.95.
