Dear Ralph

800 REV Oil Consumption

Dear Ralph:
I have a 2005 800 REV that is using about 20:1 oil. Several of us have the same oil consumption, and can’t get it any lower with the adjuster nut, as recommended by our dealer. We are using Klotz 100% synthetic KL-216. Should it be lower, we were thinking it should be more in the 30:1 or 40:1 range. The machines run fine and the plugs look good, but it is expensive!!

We’ve seen some of the arms on the oil pump (that the cable is pulling on) stick partially or wide open during operation, so the oil consumption is higher overall than it should be. From the dealers we’ve checked with, it doesn’t seem to be a matter of binding or lubrication; they’ve been replacing the pumps in most cases as they only come as a sealed unit. Being a 2005, I’d reset the cable to spec and ask your dealer about pump replacement. We’ve used Klotz in many sleds over the years, and 20:1 is way more oil than the Rotax needs to be well-lubed!
