Dear SnowTech,
I have been a long time subscriber. Your publication is truly the publication for the many engineers like myself that participate in the sport of snowmobiling. This is because you offer the most technically sound advice and articles out of all your competitors.
That being said, in your December 2016 issue, on page 22, you mention tempering hyfax by getting them hot and quickly cooling them.
This phenomena has been studied by the OEM’s as well as manufactures of UHMW PE hyfax. In multiple trials no increase of surface hardness has been found nor has any change in molecular structure been found in this activity. In long term testing no difference in wear rate has been observed between the “tempered” and untreated.
My recommendation is that riders avoid overheating their hyfax, as you know, hyfax can melt and stick to the track clips. This situation can cause clutch/belt damage or leave a person stranded if not managed correctly.
Keep up the good work with SnowTech and continue doing what you do. Keep riding as it’s great to see you guys on the snow and dirt bike trails!
