1972 Nov / Dec Snowmobiler’s Race & Rally Magazine

$20.00

By the fifth year of publishing Race & Rally Magazine, the publication had grown to three issues per winter season – Fall, Winter and the “new” November-December issue that kept snowmobilers satisfied in the period leading right up to winter. With the November-December 1972 issue, Rupp racer Jay Sperry Sr. was on the cover counter steering quite hot through a corner trying to take an inside line with a Ski-Doo Blizzard and Sno-Jet Thunderjet in pursuit.

Description

By the fifth year of publishing Race & Rally Magazine, the publication had grown to three issues per winter season – Fall, Winter and the “new” November-December issue that kept snowmobilers satisfied in the period leading right up to winter. With the November-December 1972 issue, Rupp racer Jay Sperry Sr. was on the cover counter steering quite hot through a corner trying to take an inside line with a Ski-Doo Blizzard and Sno-Jet Thunderjet in pursuit.

The tech Q&A section that later evolved into the popular “Dear Ralph” column gets going with Race & Rally tech expert Vern Wieberdink fielding the questions. Vern also does a tech piece called “Bolt on Performance Parts” showcasing tuned exhaust systems, piston stuffers and ram air silencers. Go-fast mods were big business, even in 1972.

Feature stories include the “Can-Am Effort”, a close-up on the Ski-Doo race team headed by Yvon Duhamel and Gaston Ferland. After Ski-Doo had announced there would be no “factory” race team for the 71-72 season, these two still showed up and won their fair share of events, fielding a fiercely competitive race effort at ovals, cross country and speed runs.

“7 Times Polaris” tells the story of the International 500 endurance race at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Polaris Race Director Bob Eastman said before the race that “It sounds like a bore” to go around a mile-long high banked ice bowl five hundred times. Racers included Bob Eastman, Stan & Doug Hayes, Leroy Lindblad, Tom Marks, Phil Mickelson, Jim Bernat, Steve Ave, Ed Schubitzke and winner Laverne Hagen. After the race, Eastman admitted, “It was the greatest race we had all winter. It was really fun.” Sure it was Bob – Polaris won the race and took the first seven places!

Publisher and Editor Jim Beilke explores the virtues of snowmobiles and hunting, showing how capable the machines were in retrieving big game in the high country of Montana and South Dakota. He also critiques the new laws being passed regulating their use. Jim is especially critical of the Minnesota DNR regulations, while he praises the vision of the South Dakota laws. Sound familiar?

Adventure continues with a “Day on Lion’s Head” as the Race & Rally staff spends a day riding at one of the premier snowmobile destinations on the planet, Lion’s Head Mountain near West Yellowstone, Montana.

Amateur racing takes front stage in “The Day the Pros Were Banned”. Would plain ordinary guys show up to race if they didn’t have to worry about competing against the pro teams? A total of 97 racers showed up at Alexandria, Minnesota to test their skills and challenge their machines, including local Rupp/Ski-Doo dealer Earl Anderson who would later go on to become an International Watercross Champion at Grantsburg.
