….during a recent discussion regarding roundslide vs. flatslide carburetors, the question arose as to why the OEMs had switched from VM rounds to TM flats. The normal reasons of throttle response, airflow, shorter intake tract length and fuel atomization all came up, but then perhaps the most logical reason was analyzed; flatslide carbs are cheaper to buy than roundslides! Many calibration engineers have stated over the years that roundslide Mikunis are easier to tune, but the market wanted easier pulling throttles and the perception was that flats were “higher performance” than rounds. Now, with the advent of various injection systems, this becomes more of a moot point, but there are still a large number of hardcore tuners who continue to believe the VM Mikuni to be the easiest carb to tune for modified two-stroke snowmobile applications.
