Yamaha will return to the snocross race tracks for the 2006-2007 World Power Sports Association (WPSA) national series with a factory supported effort competing in the Pro Open Class. Yamaha has signed Boss Racing and superstar Robbie Malinoski, 2006 WPSA Pro Stock and Pro Open champion, to pilot its Nytro-based (3-cylinder) 4-stroke snocross Open Class sleds for this race season.
“We wanted a top-tier national driver to lead our testing program,†commented Yamaha Snowmobile Race Manager Greg Marier. “Robbie is a proven champion willing to take on the 4 stroke challenge in snocross. That’s exactly the attitude we wanted for the program. Our goals this year are simple: we want to prove our 4-stroke sled has the performance to be competitive, and we will use our snocross experience to improve future Yamaha snowmobiles.â€
Also making a North American comeback is veteran racer and 2006 Japanese National Snocross Champion Yuji Nakazawa. Both racers will work out of the Yamaha / Boss Racing trailer, providing their engineering support team with constant feedback on the 4 stroke test sleds.
“We are aware of the hard work ahead,†added Marier. “But Yamaha has the courage to take the 4-stroke challenge to the highest level of snocross racing.â€
